Fished Timber Lake on Sunday, March 16th with partner Brian Long in really tough conditions. At launch we were at a balmy 54 degrees and just 30 minutes into the trip the wind started howling. According to the weather man there were 40 mph wind gusts out of the north and after fishing in it I agree. It was the first time I’ve ever seen white caps on Timber Lake. I spoke to the group that fished the day before we got there and they had similar results. The fish were very hard to locate. We beat the banks with spinners, weightless rigs, jigs, cranks of all varieties, Texas rigged plastics in red bug, watermelon, green pumpkin, purple, etc, and at 10:30 am we had yet to get a bite! This was not the Timber Lake I know.
The usual spots weren’t working so we threw out the playbook. Having an oversized trolling motor we were able to fish out in open water on some deep structure we located. I caught two with one fish weighing just under 5 pounds. The day dragged on and we were really having to grind it out finding areas here and there that would give us some break from the wind. Every now and then you would realize that the wind had layed down for a bit but that was only because it would really start howling again.
It wasn’t much longer before the celebration came from the back of boat. Brian still had a skunk on and then came the magic tree. Cast after cast came fish after fish, none of them under 3 pounds. I thought he was going to do a backflip right there in the boat. So Brian was suddenly the heavy sack in the boat and I spent the rest of the day playing catch up. For the first time I can recall, we didn’t catch one fish under the 14” cull line. Some were thin but most had a little belly on them.
Tight lines,
Jackson
P.S. I have a VERY heavy duty tie down that someone dropped while at Timber Lake. It is yellow in color. Call me at 903-456-5554 so I can get it back to you.

One point I forgot to mention….. There was standing water in most of the ditches on the way to the lake from the rain the night before. The trailer tires (dock with the feeder on it) are now in the water so it looks like the lake got a good amount of water. I would guess over six inches. A few more downpours like that and we will be better prepared for this summer.
