With Timber Lake closing down at the end of the month for deer season I wanted to get in one last trip.  I was pleasently surprised to find a boat in the water and tied to the old semi rig.  No problems getting into the boat and easily navigated into deeper water.  The conditions at 7:15 a.m. this morning were air temperature at 55 degrees, overcast and no wind. Caught a total of six fish. Caught my largest fish of the year which I estimated to be around six pounds.  The big one was caught on a zara spook and the other fish were caught on lipless crankbaits and a silver jerkbait.

Hey Jack,
I feel your pain!  My last trip of the year is the day after tomorrow and I’m going to have withdrawals from not going out there.  Congrats on the six pounder.  The way you describe the boat being tied up gives me the impression the lake caught some water.  That’s great news and as I look toward Sulphur Bluff right now there is rain headed out that way.  Thanks for the report.

I agree JB, I will have TL withdrawals all winter long!! Unfortunately, I had to cancel my Saturday evening reservation, so there is a spot open. Someone please take it to ease my pain!

Jack:  I too like the Zara spook for topwater action and found one in the timber on my last trip to Timber Lake….BUT, it didn’t have propellers.  Was that yours? And has fishing the spook without propellers been more successful for you?  If its yours, I’d be willing to return it to you for more information on Timber Lake.  My fishing partner and I are heading that way the 24th for our “last day” of 2013 at Timber Lake.  Many thanks,

Bob,
It was not mine. I do not use propellers and use the basic “walk the dog” technique. There is nothing more exciting than a big bass hitting a spook from below and the explosion that goes with it.

Hey Bob,

Is it one of the larger style spooks?  If so, it’s probably mine.  I’ve lost multiples out there in frog and baby bass type of green patterns.  I had some 20 pound braid I was using and if I would set the hook too hard on a big fish, the line would just snap.  I’ve since put 40 pound braid on my topwater rig and solved that problem.  One of the fish kept jumping around trying to shake the bait loose and it looks like she might have.  The spook works best out there once the Pop-R/Chug-Bug/Yellow Magic bite slows down.  I think we had a lot of people throwing the same surface baits for a while and that big Zara Spook was still getting bites and usually bigger fish.  I’ve got a whole box full so I would vote that you hang on to it and give it a try next spring when you go out there.

Tight Lines,
Jackson
