On previous trips to this lake I have caught very large crappie while bass fishing. Today I decided to do something very different and left all of my bass equipment at home and focused exclusively on the crappie. Caught a total of 24 crappie in less than 3 hours with the average size just below 14 inches. The largest was just over 17 inches. Caught most trolling with small shallow diving crankbaits but spinners and jigs were also effective.  Caught virtually all of them in the dead center of the lake.  Besides a great fish fry it should also help the bass by removing a food competitor.

I’d like to try that next time out.  What color/jig types were working for you?

Small bluegill crank baits and green jigs.  Also caught a few with a white streamer fly trailing 10 feet behind the boat.
