I hunted Canton Kickapoo with my 10 yo son for opening day for early teal. I set up a temporary blind on the south arm of the horseshoe near the dam and pitched out a small mixed decoy spread. Got finished getting set up around 10 minutes past legal shooting.
Weather was hot and the sky was blue bell.
Saw one flight of 7 or 8 BWT fly across the north arm, east or west, around 8 am. Altitude would have been low enough to pass shoot if set up was over there. Saw one loner BWT flying back, about 830 am or so. Saw nothing else and had no shooting opportunities.
Hunted until 1130. Then off to Dairy Palace for deer and elk burgers and then off to the Ole Miss-Texas game.
I think early teal will be spotty this year. We need a front or two. Spring up north was late. There are birds around (I have several credible reports of birds around) but the best weekend may end up being the 28th unless we really cool off later this week.
It’s still good to get out, get used to setting up again, learn the properties, try out the new gear, etc., so I would encourage everyone to get out and give it a shot, late Spring and hot weather or not.
