Epic fishing at JerMar Lake

Tim Costlow and I spent an epic morning catching high quality fish at JerMar Lake on Saturday 9/7/13.  We had planned a full day of fishing but we only wound up fishing until about 10:30 but it wasn’t because the fishing wasn’t in a word - spectacular.  We set out just before sunrise fishing topwater and from the first cast until the last cast it was a constant “fish on” experience.

We conservatively caught 75 fish ranging from one brave little 6” bass that wasn’t much larger than the lure to a top of 5 lbs.  Average was probably in the 3-3.5 lb range with more that a handful that were larger than that.  I never changed lures for the entire morning, fishing a Heddon Torpedo and only stopped long enough to re-tie it a couple times..  I can’t recall the number of times that a fish struck at the moment the lure hit the water and if not then it was within the first jerks of the lure.

The lake has some mat on the surface as the levels are down somewhat but that was where the fish were holding and all we did was drift from the dock to the other end and then troll back and do it again.

Thanks Private Water Fishing for getting access to such a great body of water.

Trey is correct…all in 3 hours of fishing. There is no telling how many fish we would have caught had I not had to leave due to a family emergency. The bite was fierce the entire morning and the fish fought aggressively. What is most remarkable was that only about a dozen of these fish were under 14 inches.

The nice average size is a testament to all those members who harvested fish this year and the commitment to quality management from the owner. We reached our harvest goal in June. The owner and I have weekly conversations about the next step at his lake. We will be releasing thousands of tilapia in the lake in about 2-3 weeks; allowing the fish to really fatten up going into winter.

There are a myriad of reasons a lake has nice solid fish. However, the days when they turn on, like they did for you guys can often not be explained. Days like this make one appreciate the dog days when you struggle for 5 bites all day. Stories like this are what make my day as the owner of PWF. I love it!!!!

No ducks were seen while we were there in the morning. Plenty of wading birds but no ducks
