Slot Fish
Member Nick Fowlkes and I headed out to the Hat and Star Ranch this past Saturday with the buster boat in tow. Launching was really easy from the bank at the makeshift boat ramp. Lots of work has recently been done on this place. Plenty of brush piles have been added but we were unable to pull any fish off of them. My guess is that fish aren’t relating to them just yet but maybe we just couldn’t get the bite. The morning bite was really slow. Only two fish before lunch but both were over 16 inches. As soon as 1:00 hit, the fish on main lake points turned on a bit for us. Casting into 15 foot of water seemed to do the trick. We would head back out to deeper water on occasion and throw at the banks sometimes but 90% of our fish came from 10-15 of water. Texas rigged worms (red bug) took the title but green pumpkin came in second. The fish of the day was Nick’s and weighed 3.79 and came on a spinner bait. We tried quite a few baits….. flipping timber with jigs and TX rigs, traps, spinners, jerk baits, flukes, swim baits, deep divers, lipless cranks, etc. The fish we caught looked pretty stunted and thin. I didn’t see any of those big bulging guts that you would expect from this time of year. The scenery was gorgeous and the weather was perfect. We culled 13 fish from the lake and I would definitely return.
