First of all let me say that Bedrock Ranch is an absolutely gorgeous property that took me back to the cow pasture fishing as a kid. Heed the warning for trucks or SUVs only though, it is a solid 15 minute drive once you leave the pavement and some of the gravel "Humps" are tall enough to scrap the steps on my stock height Silverado. If you are use to camping trails, or pasture popping, it should be no trouble at all though. I would NOT bring a boat any larger than my 15' skiff however unless the water level comes up considerably, and even then getting a larger boat down might be "Exciting" in some of the rougher sections of the ranch roads. A SEDAN OR LOW SLUNG SUV WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT MAKE IT!
Once down to the launch area, the grass was neatly mowed, and there is plenty or room to launch anything you like, although the bank grade was pretty steep with the lower water level, we did get my skiff in with almost no fuss.. (Out however, well...read on) Once we got the boat in, we started picking up fish almost immediately on the edges of the thick grass about 50' from the bank. There is very thick vegetation 6-12" under the surface that covers about 50% of the lake and we got bit all day working the edges of this stuff. The water was stained and murky with around 6-10" of visibility and lots of sediment. We fished natural color chatterbaits all day and only had a few lulls longer than 20 minutes with no fish. The fish fought hard, regardless of thier weight class and were a blast at 10" or 18" long. Just after 10am a front moved through and we got sprinkled on for about 20 minutes but we fished though it and kept right on catching. The final count of the day was 26 bass, with 6 going in the cooler and a few more shook off at the boat. Best fish of the day, was a 3.11lb. For a little over a 3 hour bass mission, we were quite pleased. Now, when it came time to leave, I decided to retrieve my skiff at about 20' down the bank from were i launched, and that was a mistake. While the approach was straighter, the angle was more than my 2WD could handle when I backed up about 1' too far and the little shower that moved throught might as well be KY jelly on the grass as far as my tires were concerned ð Luckily I did have enough service to get an SOS out to Steve, who in turn called the landowner who was kind enough to give me a easy tug forward and save the day. Both he, and his wife were amazingly sweet folks and took my little inconvenience in stride. Big thanks to them and Steve! All that said, if your doing anything but hand launching or trailer launching anything other then the lightest boats, i'd recommend a 4x4, or you may also be making a phone call for help. P.S. I mapped out the lake for you guys with my Garmins! Here is a nice map of the bottom contours!
