Fishing Hickory Creek Ranch was enjoyable as always but the numbers and size that Ron Dupree and I encountered Saturday were the lowest in over two years. A recent member posted about landing two very nice bass and both Ron and I have caught large bass from this wonderful lake. But not this time. Ron started the day with a fish on his first cast. Bass were very scattered but seemed to favor the deeper end of the lake and be far from shore. Bait and suspended bass/crappie were locally abundant on the graph. Before mid-morning, most were caught using swimbaits and lipless cranks. Later, slower techniques (dropshot, shakey head, light Carolina rig) were delivering. The issue was the size of the bass. I managed to pull a 4.2# out of one of the brushpiles but that was an exception. Most were about 12” and would have been harvested except that the annual harvest limit had already been reached. We ended the day around 2PM having caught 22 but somewhat frustrated because we know what the lake can deliver. We will be back soon and hope that our bass friends are in a more accomodating mood.
