It was a picture perfect fall day.  And I mean beautiful.

Deer Trail Ranch was recommended and it sure didn’t disappoint.  I got started just after daybreak and the air temps were 36 degrees with water temps at 54 yet by the end of the day it was a balmy 65 degrees and the water surface temps went to just over 56.  I boated over thirty LMB and one chunky crappie.  I could not get a bite on my wake baits and I thought they would be the recipe for success in such a lake.  Flukes were the bait to have.  There weren’t five casts in a row that went without a fish.  Most of the fish were from fluke size up to two pounds.  I had three fish that were over three pounds and all were a ton of fun.  I abandoned the flukes in search of bigger fish out in the deep and that’s the only reason I didn’t catch 50.  All of the “bigger” fish came from down deep on cranks and C-rigs.  Senkos had success as well but it was hard to put down the Mardi Gras and other watermelon variations of the Super Fluke.  This lake wasn’t far off the main road and really easy to navigate.  The boat launch, though dirt, was steep into the water and easy to use.  This was the most prolific day I’ve had on a PWF lake.  In fact, if you count the morning and the evening, I caught probably 15 fish in the first cove right next to and north of the boat launch.  Water clarity was great with visibility down to 6 or 7 feet.  If these fish get a bit more size to them this will be one of the top lakes to fish.  The markings on these fish made them beautiful to look at.  I will check this one off the list and be back next year.

Now that you tried Deer Trail you should take a trip to Julian’s for some winter Bass fishing. An excellent spot to catch 25 fish on a cold January or February day.  Watermelon flukes, red and white spinner baits.  Tough tossing a crankbait with all the timber below the surface.  But here’s the secret.  Fish a red crankbait, shallow running 2 to 4 feet max.  Along the dam.  Cast to the dam and retrieve.  You will catch some nice fish.  If you can locate the crappie use a Johnson beetle spin and you’ll get a mess of them.  I’ve stood on the dock in February and caught 13 straight bass on 13 casts with a red spinner bait.  Remember to move the boat slow with all the sunken timber, otherwise the boat will stop and you’ll be taking a bath.  After you try this location I have a few more places for you to hit the numbers.

Stop twisting my arm Robert!  Okay, okay.  I give.  I just booked it for next Wednesday and I’ll have the arsenal you recommended in tow.  I can’t thank you enough for the pointers.  I’ll post a full report.  Tight lines!

When you get your fill of those small Bass, book the sister lake when hunting ends just down the end of the street, Timber Lake. The Bass are bigger and I really like the timber better anyway…. Makes you think there is a monster beside every tree….

Regarding water clarity was great:  The general rule of thumb is that you want as little water clarity as possible for the best fishing.  In your case, however, the rule did not hold true.

yes sir Timber Lake is very good too, last time out there put me on at least 6 to 8 at 4 lb to 5 lb range and 3 over 5 lb all on chatter bait with lake fork trailer.  and Julian in the winter has done the same with gold and silver blade 1/2oz spinner with white and chartrus skirt!
