I’ve had 4 outings to Malouf this summer, June 8th, June 15th, June 22nd, and July 6th.

First trip I took a friend with me as a guest, and we had wonderful weather(low wind, part cloud cover), but it was hot. I caught 40, my guest landed 21. We fished the same baits during the same time periods, starting with a popper, and then moving to a ned rig and a fluke.

Second trip I took a friend with me as a guest, and the weather was good again. I landed 50 for the day, and my guest caught 23. Same pattern, starting with topwater popper, then moving onto ned rig and flukes as the day went on. My guest did get onto a roll using a lipless crankbait. I broke off what would have been the largest fish I’ve seen at Malouf – she came up to show the massive head and then surged under the boat and was gone as I failed to adjust my drag to match her energy. Easily a 6, possibly bigger. Never seen a fish bigger than 4lbs at Malouf out of 17 trips.

Third trip I went solo – the wind forecast was crazy and I didn’t want to disappoint a guest with a poor day of fighting the wind and trying to fish. 34 landed – I spent a few hours trying to control the boat and fish, but eventually gave up and fished from the point by the launch and picked up a handful using a spinnerbait. Same baits used, but I did add a swimjig to the mix as the wind required something with weight to properly fish.

Fourth trip was solo again. The wind was low for the first few hours but picked up to 9mph and gusts to 20mph. 54 fish landed overall. 9 on a popper, 13 on a ned rig, 7 on a fluke, 19 on a crankbait, and 6 on a spinnerbait. Crankbait came out when nothing else was working as the water is very clear, but the wind was making the fish hesitant to feed. Natural pattern squarebill along the grass lines consistently produced. My best output on a crankbait in a session.

Overall fish size was up to 3lbs against all outings, average is 1.5lbs. Quite a few big sunfish on th earlier trips as they were bedding and did not like the ned rig being around them.

I really like this property, but I need to venture out to new places and gets to know them as well as I know this location.

Or find someone to join me at this spot, it’s fun solo but always more fun sharing the excitement.
