We knew it was going to be a hot one, so expectations were realistic.  I was able to take a friend who is just getting into bass fishing.  He had a good time and caught fish, so the day was a success.  We fished over 8 hours with temps in the mid-90s.  We consumed a lot of water, utilized cooling towels and even took a lengthy break in the truck with AC cranked.

I have not been to Deer Trail in 3 years.  It seems like every time I try to book it, weather gets in the way.  My last outing there was cut short, so I have been wanting to go back for a while.

We started early by tossing frogs in the pads and had good hookups.  As the clock moved, so did the thermometer.  We worked various parts of the lake landing a few on frogs.  My friend threw a small swimbait and landed several small fish (8” & under).  We got bites on a crankbait and chatterbait as well.

The noticeable aspect of the day was the gap in size.  We culled 6 bass that were all under 10”.  We returned 8 bass that were over 16”.  There was nothing in between.  That shows that the harvest and management have made a huge impact.  All of the larger bass were healthy and roughly the same size (about 16.5” and 2.5lbs).  The biggest of the day came in at 3.08.  I lost one at the net which would have pushed 6lbs.

I can’t wait to return when the heat subsides. This is going to be a top 3 fishery in the club very soon.
