It was a rather unusual day at Hickory Creek Ranch. Ron Dupree and I started, as usual, at the little bridge. For the first time in numerous trips, neither of us caught a fish there and we had only one hit. We then caught 6 from the pier. Once in the boat we circled the lake hitting vegetated shorelines, the island, brushpiles, the two southern “coves”, and the middle of the lake. Each produced a few fish with the deeper water spots producing more and bigger fish. What was surprising was the almost 50% harvest rate, higher than it has been (for us) in a while. The only big bass we saw was the one throwing my hook on a jump. We each caught a few 2.5 # – 3.75# but just as many small ones. Topwaters and crankbaits were a lost cause. Chatterbaits, underspins, swimbaits, and weightless creature baits accounted for almost all of the catch. We landed 38 bass (20 harvested), one bluegill, and one crappie. We observed several instances of groups of small bass chasing shad in the middle in the morning.
The lake is very full, the water is clean, and 100% of the big lake is fishable. Unfortunately, the eagles didn’t make an appearance before we had enough of the heat and left at 2:15.
As always, a great fishing spot with great landowners.
