Fished at Toby Lake with a guest just for the morning slot.
Wind was from the SSE 8 to 13 mph with gust to 20 mph. Water clarity in the creek inlets was stained but the large lake body was relatively clear. Water depth is high.
We fished out of two kayaks and quickly realized that Toby fishes like a lake and not a pond.
Nevertheless, despite the wind and large expansive water to fish, we were able to land 14 fish with the largest at 4.6 lbs. We spent most the morning trying to find the fish with no bites in either of the two creek inlets, near the banks, or in the deeper depths near the dam.
Nearly all our fish were caught in the main body of the lake roughly 20 to 40 yards outside of the inlets to the creeks.
I believe we would have caught more fish numbers if we had figured this out earlier in the morning.
Most fish caught on a 6th Sense orange (crawdad color) crankbait. Trick was to keep it above the grass during the retrieve.
Overall a good trip with a number of quality fish caught under summertime conditions. This lake will make you work if windy and fishing out of kayaks.
Like the Orca’s Capt.Quint in the movie Jaws said, “We’re gonna need a bigger boat”. (Next time we fish Toby Lake anyways….)
