Was excited for my first fishing in almost 2 months on 6/14; early Father’s Day. Checked all my equipment the day before and was all good. Got to the lake at 6am to launch at sunrise and… remote for my trolling motor is dead despite being fine the day before. Rookie move on my part not having spare batteries, so ran to the closest gas station for what I thought would be a quick fix. Alas, the remote compeltely stopped working, so not trolling motor.
So launched at 7:45am in my kayak, paddling with no anchor and 10-15 mph winds. Needlees to say, I was a tad angry. After having no luck on topwater and chatterbaits, while feeling sorry for myself, for some reason I started thinking about my Papaw who passed away when I was 10. He was the hardest working person I ever knew and numerous times, much to my mom’s chagrin told me, “Successful people in life can make chicken salad, out of chicken shit.” From that point forward, I didn’t much care if I caught anything, I just wanted to enjoy the day.
Shortly after I passed over two bait balls and it was on. Fish were stacked in a couple spots on the lake and when I found them, they absolutely hammered the offerings. These fish are carbon copies of each other and are simply strong. Without my trolling motor and spot lock, I could get 2-3 casts in before I drifted past the spot and had to paddle back up wind.
I planned to fish until 2-3pm but by 12:30, I was exhausted. 37 bass + 3 slab crappie in total. 21 over 3lbs and 7 over 4lbs; top 5 fish were been just over 20lbs. Needless to say, this place was fun and I will be back.
