I made my reservation for a Saturday morning session at Rock Chimney on Friday afternoon after checking several weather forecasts. Then a stray thunderstorm dumped over 2” of rain on the lake later that evening. I haven’t had good luck on this lake following such rain events but what the heck. I arrived to a mirror calm surface and didn’t get any topwater action at all and managed only one bite over the first 80 minutes. I relocated to the club boat area and caught a 15” and a 20.25” on a lipless crank and then several 17-18” using a chatterbait. I launched the boat and toured the lake several times. The lake is still very low and the overnight rain made the creek end of the lake muddy. I only caught three bass creekward of the launch point. The majority of the 14 bass I eventually caught by 11:30 came from the dam end of the lake and mostly the house end of the dam. The water was clearer (still its typical green) near the dam except where waves agitated bare silt and clay on the shore. The bass were close to shore and, although I rotated through various lures (soft plastics, swimbait, frog, squarebill), most were caught on a chatterbait with a couple on a knocking lipless crankbait. I ended up landing 14 (losing several more) with only three lesss than 15” and three of 20” to 21”. The big ones were topedo-shaped rather than full-bodied and made long runs.
I had a nice visit with the Stanleys as I was packing up and he expressed surprise that I had done so well considering the overnight storms. I too was surprised and pleased at how good a morning it had turned out to be.
