Spent another delightful afternoon at Deer Trail. This has become our favorite lake so far. We'd rather catch numerous small fish than not catch big fish elsewhere. lol
It was sunny and clear with high temp around 72 with variable winds from the south up to about 15MPH. Water was clear as usual. Lake looks to be about a foot low. Water lilies and cattails are dormant but there is plenty of vegetation on the lake floor and near the shoreline. Saw some ducks on the lake all afternoon.
We caught about 20 total, all bass, from babies that make you wonder how they got such a big lure in their little mouths up to about 3 pounds. All were healthy and scrappy fighters. Best lures for numbers were shallow crank baits in shad color. Best big fish lures were weighted flukes, which is what I used to catch a 6-pounder there last week. All in all, I caught the first and the most but Sue caught the biggest, but who's counting? lol
One hot spot, is the cove on the west side just north of the boat launch. It seems to hold lots of small to medium small fish. The biggest fish we have found so far seem to be in the middle of the lake. My wife caught two nice ones there as did I.
We tried topwaters before sundown with minimal luck, one each on a buzzbait, zara spook and jitterbug.
We look forward to going back there.
