Fresh of bank fishing Tear Drop on Saturday, I headed to Grain Bin on Sunday. I’ve fished it a handful of times so I knew that its large pontoon in the wind wouldn’t be easy to manage. I was able to boat five fish in the 2-4 lb. range during the course of six hours. I will say it took some effort to get this done. Fishing that large pontoon solo in a decent wind with the algae blooming and vegetation was challenging. At one point very early on, I realized my anchor couldn’t hold the boat in most areas, which hadn’t been a problem at Grain Bin in prior trips. I was quickly getting pushed into the shallows before the bend. I pulled the anchor up as quickly as I could. It was heavy and coated in algae, along with the rope, which made the rope slick. Worst of all, when I went to start the motor I realized it was now coated in algae and the water I was in was dense as well, so no power. I was kind of laughing to myself thinking, “How am I going to get out of this situation if the winds down ease?” I spent the next 30-minutes or so pushing off the trees along the inside edge of the lake to turn the pontoon and rowing to get the potoon to a spot where I could use the motor. After that I went risk-off. I opted to fish only where I was certain I could get the anchor to hold the boat in place—near perimter shore line where I could tie-off on something or I’d simply throw the anchor in the mud along the shore. Unless you know something I don’t, I’d avoid the Grain Bin pontoon for now if it’s windy and you’re fishing solo. I will add the new lock works great and the lake is quite full. It looks like it would be fun to fish in a kayak if you could keep that steady (I’ve never fished in a kayak so I don’t know if that’s easy or impossible). There could be a lot of potential in the back water areas which are accessible as they’re currently relatively free of pads/etc. The beavers continue to make progress on their dam project around the bend of the lake. I saw a large one working for a moment.

Steve,
Sorry you had a bit of trouble with the large pontoon. Do you know what size trolling motor you have? We recommend at least a 50 with two batteries.
thanks
Steve
