Dean French and myself fished yesterday afternoon on Rough Creek Lake. Back in June I made several trips there and most had very good success. Not yesterday! The water was about two feet lower and many trees were now exposed. Our boat got caught about 8 times on trees that were just under the surface and it took some doing to dislodge the boat.
From the actual fishing standpoint, areas that had produced on prior trips were not productive. In five hours, I caught 4 bass and lost one, all on spinner baits. And, the average size was about 13” while in the past the average size was about 17” with the largest fish going 20”-21”. The temperature was fine, but the wind was problematic.
Also, since the lake is down, the boat ramp gave us trouble. If you are using small boats such as a Bass Buster, etc., launching is no problem since you do it by hand. But, if you are trailering a larger boat, the trailer frame scrapes against the sand, dirt and rocks that comprise the boat ramp. We almost did not make it out of the boat ramp as we were leaving. Dean had to put some flat rocks down by the front tires.
Note to Steve: You might want to address this situation with the people at Rough Creek Lodge
If the lake gets back to more normal levels, I will go
there again next spring. It can be really good,
