Fished 3/24 at Moonshine on my first trip of 2025. Left DFW and it was 56 degrees, hopped on the lake at 7:45am and it was 38 degrees. Nothing like a Texas spring day where you start out in thermal gear and end in shorts.
Water temp was 57 at launch and rose to 62 degrees when I left at 2:30pm. I read the previous report of the lake being wide open with the lilly pads still not fully formed and the lake probably fishes 25% larger right now than when I fished LY.
Made my first pass around the lake and started fishing shallow in the pads, 2-4 feet of water in most places. Thought they would be pushed up, but no dice with larger 6 inch swimbait, frog and chatterbait burned over the pads. Found all of them hanging in the transition area outside the pads in 5-7 feet. Caught nearly all of them on wacky rig. Caught 11 on the first pass, mainly to the right (NE) of ramp.
Second pass I changed up all 6 poles, and downsized to a 4 inch swimbait. That was the ticket as the fish moved shallow as the water warmed and I would catch fish in almost every spot. They were blowing up the swimbait like it was topwater given it was so shallow. Just an absolute blast. If you’re going to fish those pads, bring your heavy gear as they’re still thick. I had a heavy rod with 40lb braid and still had to horse a few out.
Caught 39 in fishing around 6.5 hours with four over 4lbs and probably another dozen around 3lbs with the largest at 4.61. Beautiful lake that is well worth the drive from DFW.
