The lake might be shaped like Texas, but it was the Carolina rig that got the bites today.
I fished around 6 hours from the bank. In the first 4 hours, I caught 2 bass that were both over the cull limit of 15” (and not another bite). One hit a flipping jig, and the other bit a Yum Dinger (both black & blue).
The frustration was starting to hit. I had thrown everything at them with little to show for it. Greg came down for a quick visit, and we talked about the deeper pockets that were close to shallow flats. I just knew that were likely holding in these transition areas, but I couldn't reach them from the bank. (With the wind, I wasn't interested in using the boats.)
Finally, it hit me….Carolina rig! I used to throw it all the time when fishing large public lakes. Why don't I throw it anymore? I knew I could throw it halfway across the whole property to reach the likely holding spots.
I had not brought all of my tackle options today, but I had the necessary components. I started throwing a baby brush hog on about a 2’ leader as far as I could near the “panhandle” area of the lake. I was dragging the bottom letting the bait do its thing. The bites started coming. I ended up catching 14 in the last 2 hours and left them still biting. The fights were fun since they were hitting quite a distance out.
In total, I returned 3 and put 13 in the freezer. The biggest were 17”. All of the fish seemed healthy.
