Ron Dupree and I tried to do our part for lake management at Post Oak Lake on Friday by harvesting 37 bass and 2 crappie. We didn’t target small and tiny bass, we just couldn’t get many bites from larger ones.  I landed two bass on topwater (five blowups) early but the only action was near the boat launch.  We cruised the dam and made our way to the stumps while catching a couple on undespins and chatterbaits.  For the second trip in a row there was nothing happening around the stumps.  We found some bass around the bridge with Ron using a dropshot and me using a light Carolina rig.  As the day progressed and we circled the lake, Ron’s dropshot was outfishing the Carolina rig 3:1 and anything else 10:1.  I finally broke down and tied on a dropshot to not be further embarressed.  We found small bass against the bank and in 15 feet of water and everywhere in between.  We ended up with 77 bass and 2 crappie landed.  Many of the 36 harvested bass were 7”– 12” with fewer in the 12” – 14” range.  We caught a few in the 16” – 17” range.

The lake is 2+ feet low with clearish water (2.5 feet visibility in small areas with a white bottom and 1.5’ elswhere).  Water temp started at 60 and ended at 64.  Mechanical harvesting of aquatic vegetation has left the lake pretty bare although a few patches of vegetation have re-established (thick vegetation up the creek but very shallow).
