Lures Used : texas rig, popper

This trip was my first to Cordo.  The property is very nice, and the land owner stopped by to greet me and give me some information about fishing there.  Great guy.  When leaving I hung around loading the boat and loitered a bit after, I’ll have to catch up with him next trip there.  Amenities there were great, very short way to the launch area right off the main road.

Launching was easy, it’s a large rock area to launch from, it worked just fine and I didn’t get muddy, always a plus.

The lake has some really nice structure around it.  Reeds on one side, laydowns along one whole side, and standing timber in the middle provided a lot of places to try out.  Felt very natural for a Texas lake!  I didn’t see any visible weeds, although fishing a crank was difficult because it picked up small bits of weeds.  I think the water was tea colored.

Most of the fish were on the deeper bank where all the laydowns are (north east bank), and generally the entire north half.  I caught a few deep near timber, but most were up near the bank taken on a Texas rig and it immediately or within a few seconds on retrieve.  Early morning I had a few blowups on a popper, but only one was hooked.

Be aware, these fish were tricky!  The fish would often hit the lure, then make a run for deeper water.  This created an issue where it was difficult to set the hook or get a tight line, because they were speeding towards me under the boat.  I missed probably 6 fish this way.  I was reeling extremely fast to take up line.   I’ve been fishing a while and have never had that many fish take evasive maneuvers and get away in a row.  Good for them.

Total was 11 culls, still nice fish around 14 inches, only one dink.  5 returned, they were just over 15 inch.  And at least 6 used speed and cunning to get away.  The time fished was around 8-12, so overall a very productive day.  Thank you to the owner and PWF, great fun.
