Property Name : Pecan Gap
Reservation Date : 09/24/2024 AM -
Total Fish/Sizes : 4
Lures Used : ned rig, spinner

Took my grandmother-in-law from St. Louis to this beautiful place. We’ve shared so many fishing stories in the past with seperate family members; it was time to create a fishing story together.

For anyone who has come here, you know how prestine and beautiful this lake is. The dock access is perfect for my gma and she brought in 20 bluegills, 7 the size of a frisbee golf.

Got on the pontoon and putted around, landed one on a ned rig and then 3 on a white/chartreuse doulbe willow (silver and gold). 2 were over 3lbs 1 was right at 14inches- all around hard cover. Those catches were fun, but nothing will beat the surprised laughter and awe watching my gma land those bluegills.

Grateful for PWF to create this wonderful memory.

What type of bait/lures did your gma use to catch the bluegills?  I don’t know anything about fishing for bluegills and thought I might give it a try.  Thanks!

I used a Berkley Max Scent Flatnose Minnow and cut them up in pea-size. We figured out that we just dropped it down (instead of casting) and letting it slowly sink. If no bite within 5-8 seconds, we would pick up the line and drop it at a different location. We found that fishing by the left corner of the dock was the money spot. I think my grandma caught 7 in a row.

I may take my toddlers here for blue gill, and this is what i’d do:

  1. canned corn as bait (super cheap and you can chum the waters and get the fish on a feeding frenzy)
  2. line that is 6lb or less
  3. small bobber 6-8 inches up

If you don’t want to get corn, just cut up your senkos in to the size of peas and you’ll be good. When you get up to the dock, you’ll see the feeders. You’ll see the pellets scattered on the dock, and you can see the size they’re used to. Throw them in the water and see how slowly it sinks and how the bluegills react to them. The smaller ones will hit first, we found the biggest bluegills are about 2 feet down. You could add a split shot and jig your bait up and down in that depth.

If you notice that the bluegills have all of the sudden stopped biting, it’s most likely big bass under them, so I would have a seperate rod rigged with a wacky/fluke/neko rig and let it hit bottom. You may land a big one!

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks for responding!  Last question:  what size hook did you use for the bluegills?

John,

The artificial fish food works great on our lakes that have artificial fish feeders/food. Try this.
