Booked Salt Lick on 5/14 as I had an open day for work. Texted Eric the day before to let him know I’d be out there and he told me he’d be putting in a load of 40k shad that morning and would I take some videos.  Of course, plus I just wanted to see 40k shad released!

Arrived at 6:30am, 68 degree air temp, 73 degree water temp.  NW winds calm early, then blowing 15+ by noon.  Figured I would get in 45 minutes or so of fishing before Eric was scheduled to arrive with the shad.  Caught a few on a Yellow Magic early, then caught half dozen in the NW corner on senkos.  Eric got stuck getting the shad, so arrived around 9:45am.  It was pretty cool watching this all unfold and seeing it live.  The videos are too large to upload here, but I sent them to Scott who might be able to share.  I figured the bass might have a frenzy on their new forage with blowups everywhere that are common at Salt Lick, but it was the shad’s lucky day.  The water is stained for Salt Lick due to constant rain recently.  All the runoff has the water off-blue.

After the shad release I stayed in the area just to check it out and there were some sporadic blow ups of which I would bomb casts at them downwind with my Spook.  Caught two 4lbers on back to back casts and five total in about a half hour doing this.  moved on and fished drop offs, points, etc.  Also, the lake has moss/algae on it from all the run off/cow manure which turned out to be a huge help.  Fish were sitting on drop offs, right underneath the moss.  Anything slow dropping, they would nail (Senko, fluke, etc.)

Finally got tired of fighting the wind as even my spot lock on the kayak was getting pushed around.  Left a little after 2pm with 41 bass, with 30 being overs.  fantastic day at a great thanks.  Huge thanks to Eric for all the work he puts into Salt Lick as well as Blue Rock and Long lake.
