I chose to fish on Sunday right after other anglers hit Post Oak the previous two days rather than face the eclipse tourists on the road on Monday.  Good call. The bass seemed to have recovered well from the pressure.  I rigged up and launched the boat, gave it a few seconds of motor power and then let it coast toward the dam as I started casting. A couple of casts later, my Yo-Zuri pencil popper disappeared is a large but surprisingly quiet boil.  The fish immediately headed under the boat and then circled the boat twice deep before coming to the surface and then diving under the boat again. 24.25” but only 8 pounds (looked post-spawn thin and a little beat) and caught only 60 feet from the ramp. The rest of the topwater bite was a letdown, only two more landed. I ended up catching nine bass along the dam using moving baits before trying the SE shoreline and the big creek/stumps area.  Nothing but a couple harvested bass.  A small front came through about 9AM (mostly a wind shift and clearing skies) and then the NW shoreline between the ramp and the bridge was the best producer.  Many of the bass were caught close the the shoreline vegetation using a weightless creature bait.  I found a group of suspended crappie in about 10 feet of water mid-lake but was only able to catch two of them. The breeze died about 2PM and the bite was really slow after that.  I ended up with 40 bass and two crappie.  Most of the bass were 2-2.5# with four about 19” and 11 harvested.

The lake is full to spill with very little submerged vegetation but areas of shoreline grass are expanding.  The stumps are fully submerged and the big creek is nagitable.  Many of the bass (including the big one) were obviously post-spawn but, once the sun came out, I was able to see a number of beds (active and inactive) in the big creek, along the dam, and scattered elsewhere.  I avoided these and didn’t target bedding bass but I’m certain I was catching some off of beds I didn’t see.

So, a great day fishing in total solitude and I didn’t have to brave the eclipse tourist motorists.  WIN-WIN.
