Three of us fished smith ranch this morning, Windy with a cloud cover and alge tinted water. Thinking summer we started deeper with cranks….nothing, switched to plastic and still nothing. Not a typical smith ranch outting. Threw a worm upon the bank and hopped it back into the water and bang.Finished with about 30 to 4.5 lbs that seemed like 8lbs Two “dinks” and several “huge” fish that were pre-released with the vast majority caught close to or at the water’s edge, weird. We used the on site boat but it’s in rough shape. All and all a great morning with strong, healthy fish tugging on the line

I fished the lake the next morning and also found them up on the banks behind the grass beds, which is great for me b/c my deep water fishing skills stink. Same algae in the water and same windy conditions. Because of the strong wind, I’d motor towards dam end and then rapidly float towards the other end. Because the wind was pushing me so fast, I was forced to fish fast unless I wanted to drop anchor constantly. I threw a weighted bass pro shops 4” squirmin’ shad that I threw right up on the bank and quickly swam and twitched it back. I’ll bet the water wasn’t a foot deep where the strikes came. I threw lots of other baits just to switch things up but they only wanted the squirmin’ shad. I probably caught 9-10 3 pounders, a few dinks and didn’t boat another 6-7 b/c they threw my bait right back in my face. Those bass out there jump more than I’ve ever seen!
And saying that boat is “rough” is an understatement. It really needs to be shot and put out of it’s misery!
