Got to fish Culpepper a 2nd time with PWF. Brought a friend who wanted to fish for crappie, and I was hunting the bucket mouth. He fished the metal pier and the shoreline toward the dam. I launched the boat around 1230 pm. The water clarity was maybe 8” and the water was a dye green. The ramp seemed to be in good shape, and the water was normal level compared to last time I was here being 3-4’ low. The wind was ripping 15-25 mph. I have a wide 15’ aluminum boat with a front 70# thrust trolling motor. It was not working! The wind was howling and my front tm was out. I was glad I had put a small tm on the transom, but it was only 30# thrust. Lol. I put it there mainly as a boat rudder. Anyhow, I was able to make the best of it. I tried cranking offshore a little but no luck. My fishfinder was on the front so I didn’t have it to look at. Therefore I started hitting the banks. I believe most of my bigger fish were caught 2-5’ from the bank and toward the dam end. The bass were keying on chartreuse and white colors. Red or blue didn’t work for me. They were subtle bites so I would have to either watch the line or feel for weight. Despite fighting the wind all afternoon, I ended with 10 bass and my buddy caught 1 bass and a nice catfish from the bank. I caught a couple of nice bucket mouths!

The owners came down at the end to say hi and brought us a dozen Culpepper eggs. They were super nice!

Thank you owner and PWF!

Nice job making lemonades out of lemons on that trolling motor situation.  Beautiful fish and great to leave with some nice, fresh Culpepper eggs too!

Scott,

The eggs were great. Made a nice omelet the next day!

Expenses, expenses, but I gotta get the front motor fixed. Can’t miss out on the spring!
