I’ve really been trying to search out new lakes and now with my kayak, there are plenty of options.  Decided to make the 2.5 hour drive to Cody Ranch, Moonshine Lake. I picked it because it had only had two reports and I love trying spots that seem to get overlooked a bit.  After spending the day at Moonshine Lake, I’m telling you don’t pass this place up!

Arrived just after sunrise, unloaded kayak to 42 degree air temp and 49 degree water temp (water warmed to 59 degrees early afternoon).  Started working counter clockwise from the boat ramp. Caught a 2.5lber within the first few minutes on a Hite-Delight Chatterbait, baby bluegill color with Zako trailer.  Caught a few sporadically the first few hours on chatterbait, Weightless Senko (watermelon/pumpkin) and large underspin with 6th Sense Whale.  Caught 4 across the lake, diagonal from the ramp, including best of the day at 4.2lbs.  Caught a couple ripping chatterbait thru grass and they hit right on the downfall  Also, had a couple of short strikes on the large underspin.  These fish hit hard, fight well and are super and I mean super healthy.  A couple of true footballs that clearly are gorging on food pre-winter.

Bite went cold from 11:30-1.  Decided to switch it up and downsize to a 2.8” underspin given the short strikes from earlier.  Went back to the hot spot from the morning and bam, 5 casts/fish in a row, all 2.5-3.5lbs.  Moved up the way, 3 fish in a few minutes.  All running the underspin thru the grass, as soon as it got thru, they nailed it.  Wished I had more time, but had to leave at 2pm.

Lilly pads were all dying/brown and didn’t have much holding in them from a fish perspective.  The lake is low and most of the lilly pads are only 1-3 feet.  Would love to fish this lake inthe Spring/Summer for some great topwater action.

Hope others can get out and enjoy this beautiful property.  Thanks to PWF and the owner!

Glad you got to Moonshine. It is a wonderful lake that doesn't get any pressure.  Fish are among the feistiest I encountered. I did compare them to AA,  when it starts pumping 6lbers and bigger that will be fun. That should happen soon. I do think there are 6’s in there already. Good job!
