Keeper
Fellow member and friend, Zach Polyak, and I fished Big Lake the other Friday a week or two back. Normally with a lake that is 70 acres I’d have alot to report, but because the lake is down about 3 feet, there isn’t a massive amount of available water to fish that fish can thrive in so we really just fished the middle and dam areas where there was 5FOW or more available.
- Water was 88ish, very low visibility and fertile water, we had a good wind in the second half of the day.
- Lake fishes like Tara without the brushpiles. Shallow most everywhere (even once the lake fills, it will be relatively shallow). It does need some brushpiles to hold fish near the points IMO. 30 or so would go a long way to help concentrate the fish.
- There is a fair amount of shad in the lake, though I didn’t see any bluegill beds.
- We caught 10 total in a full day of fishing with a sunrise start – all caught along the dam which is the only viable cover in the lake atm.
- I did not see any cover on my 360 but there are a couple of points in the middle of the lake that held some fish. Nothing over a 1.5lbs
- Zach got more bites than I did with his CRIG though couldn’t quite get them hooked. I caught mine early except for one late on a wacky rig. I always say if I’ve been reduced to a wacky rig, I have not had a solid day.
- Chatterbait was the best, sans skirt, rattle trap, spinnerbait got a few and a couple on soft plastics.
- I know from the survey that there are a fair amount of fish in here and good ones. I suspect with the fertile water and the cooler nights but hot days, the lake is lower in oxygen that it would be more middle fall or early summer/spring/winter and those fish are hanging out near the bottom (so not showing up on 360/SS) – and not really in a feeding mood yet.
- As this lake is close to me, I’ll try it again once we’ve gotten a decent couple of rains and the temps have settled to sub 80.
- Lake has a good shape and fertile water. Would love to see some brushpiles on North sides of the points to help concentrate the fish a bit and a few in the middle area well off the dam. With some cooler temps and rain, this lake should come alive and fill out.
