First, let me say I searched for a thread on kayaks and I did not locate one so if this is a redundant post I apologize. I have been a PWF member for a couple years now and I have been torn between a small jon boat or kayak. I think I have decided to move toward the kayak.

My question would be “What’s the best setup for me?’ I am 6’1” 245lbs and would like something that is fairly stable so I could stand up a little to stretch my back. Not looking to paddle so any advice on pedal system or trolling motor setups would be greatly appreciated also.

As usual I am sure there is a huge range in price with what I am asking. So, I do not want to spend a small fortune, but I am not looking to go the cheapest route either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I fish from a Hobie Pro Angler 12, but there are lots of good kayaks available. Mariner Sails in Dallas and Anglers Pro Tackle & Outdoors in Fort Worth both have good selections and knowledgeable sales people.

Thanks for the info John. I am in Houston but I have found a couple of places that have a good selection but wanted to get thoughts from people that have used kayaks.

I moved out of kayaks and on to an inflatable paddle board – a Bote Rackham Aero. I am 62 about 5’10” and about 225 pounds.  I am no athlete but I am entirely comfortable fly fishing off this board.  It is 38” wide and way more stable than my yak was.  They are not cheap but significantly less expensive than the Hobies.  The Hobie is an outstanding platform as well but since I fly fish I like the way cleaner deck of my paddle board.  Drawback is paddling vs pedal drive.  Plus is the weight – my board weighs maybe 50 pounds and deflated you can put it anywhere – the Hobie weighs a ton and can be challenging to load alone unless you have the right rig.

I fish from an Old Town Predator MK with the electric motor. Love it. I am 64yrs and XXL and I feel quite confortable and safe in it. Old Town has several motorized or pedal kayak models to choose from and I would be happy in any of them. Hobies are stable and well-built but more expensive. My advice would be 1) stick with 36” wide or more, 2) try out different pedal styles ( vastly different knee motion between Hobie and others), 3) visit ACK in Houston, 4) look carefully at the seat as a good seat is worth its weight in gold.

I have a Hobie PA14 and love it. It has rod holders that hold three rods on each side without sticking up in the air. I added a Motorguide Xi3 for spotlock ability. The pedal system on Hobies are superior than the prop driven pedals. Old Town Autopilot is also very nice and comes with spotlock motor equiped. I have one of each but I prefer my PA14 for fishing.

Scott, as suggested earlier, ACK in Houston or Spring is top notch. They carry multiple brands. Bad thing is that Old Town Kayaks are in demand and the Autopilot is pre order only now and will be in August before available. Autopilot however comes with the Minkota spotlock trolling motor and makesfishing so much easier to keep you in place. My PA14 has spotlock also using a Motorguide but that cost is added to the already high cost of the Hobie but still a great boat, but heavy. I would be glad to let you test drive mine if wanted and in the Nederland area. I have a place that you could testdrive it if ever wanted.
