Button Lake - West Texas Fishing
Location:
Button Lake is situated just a few miles outside of Carbon, a small town where life moves at a slower pace. The area offers a charming rural experience that allows visitors to relax and unwind from the hustle and bustle of city life. If you're nearby, don't miss a stop at the Carbon City Hall, which is a cozy building that adds to the quaintness of the town.
Lake Overview:
- Size: 19 acres, though the size may fluctuate depending on rainfall.
- Depth: The deepest point is about 11 feet, with approximately half of the lake being 4 feet deep or less when full.
- Water Quality: The lake’s water quality is ideal for supporting a healthy ecosystem, with a good balance of forage species like threadfin shad, gizzard shad, and bluegill. The presence of common carp and gizzard shad help maintain water clarity, preventing it from becoming overly clear or choked with weeds.
- Fishing: Electrofishing surveys have shown a good bass population, especially in the 2-3 lb range, with occasional bass over 5 lbs. The lake record currently stands at 13.3 lbs. The lake offers a perfect habitat for bass, and it's one of the few lakes in the area that consistently stays full due to its large watershed.
Fishing and Access:
- Boat Launching: Due to the steep banks and limited drop-off around the shore, launching larger boats is difficult. It is recommended to use smaller boats such as small jon boats, plastic boats, or kayaks. A 14-foot V-bottom jon boat is available for members, though it’s on the heavier side, so you’ll need to partially launch the boat before loading it with gear, trolling motor, and battery.
- Rock Ramp: The owner has recently added a rock ramp, making launching easier than before. Currently, the ramp is suitable for aluminum boats up to 17 feet. There’s potential for fiberglass boats to be launched in the future as the ramp settles.
Lake Habitat:
- The lake is a great example of west Texas fishing lakes, where water levels can fluctuate but the presence of natural forage species keeps the fishing excellent. It is one of the few lakes in the area that doesn’t dry up due to its large watershed, which provides consistent water levels.
Owner Information:
- The owner is known for his friendliness and knowledge of agriculture. Feel free to ask about his garden, homemade jams, frozen fruits from a nearby orchard, and black-eyed peas. He was a former agricultural teacher and is always happy to share his wealth of knowledge.
Additional Notes:
- Watercolor: The lake’s watercolor is often perfect for growing the right amount of vegetation, although it can vary from year to year. This balance helps to maintain an optimal fishing environment.
- Boat Restrictions: Until the ramp packs in further, please limit your boat size to 17 feet or smaller.
Button Lake offers an exceptional opportunity for a peaceful fishing experience in a charming, rural setting. The lake’s health and the welcoming atmosphere of the property make it a hidden gem for anglers.
