May 2024 update
Button lake has been closed for more than a year due to low water. The lake is now full (or very close to full) and ready for fishermen.
Button Lake is in the country. The lake is just a few miles outside the sleepy town of Carbon. Check out the Carbon City Hall Building, which is the size of some sheds we have seen in the back yard of suburban Home. At Private Water Fishing we love small towns where your blood pressure drops from the hustle and bustle of life in the city.
Button lake is 19 acres and about half of the lake is 4 feet or less when the lake is full. The deepest water is about 11 feet. Like most west Texas lakes, it varies in size depending on rainfall. However, the lake is on a huge watershed and is one of the few lakes in the area that never goes dry. You will find a tremendous forage base with threadfin shad, gizzard shad, and plenty of bluegills. There are numerous common carp and gizzard shad in the lake, which keep the water from getting too clear. If the water were clear, it would be completely chocked out with weeds. The water is a near-perfect color for growing the right amount of vegetation. Obviously, some years it will have more vegetation than we like and others not enough. However, at the time of our visit, the watercolor was perfect. Electrofish surveys produced lots of bass in the 2-3 lb class and a few over 5 lbs. The lake record is 13.3 lbs.
Launching anything other than a small jon boat, plastic boat or kayak will be nearly impossible. There is simply not a great area to launch a bigger boat. The bank is a bit too steep and the area around the lake does not drop enough to launch anything other than something you can hand launch.
There is an older 14-foot V bottom jon boat for members to use. The boat is heavier than most but can be handled by one person. We recommend not loading your tackle, battery, and trolling motor until you have the boat partially in the water.
The owner has added a rock ramp so launching will be much easier. As it packs in we may determine fiberglass boats can be launched but for now, please limit to 17' aluminum and smaller.
The owner is super friendly. If you see him ask about his garden, his homemade jams, frozen fruit picked from a nearby orchard, pecans, black-eyed peas. He was a former ag teacher in the area and had a wealth of knowledge about all things agriculture.

We are not harvesting bass at this time.
