Discover Backside of the Moon: A Secluded 55-Acre Escape
Nestled on a 2100-acre ranch just 70 miles northwest of downtown Fort Worth, Backside of the Moon features a stunning 55-acre lake that’s likely the most secluded spot in the club. This long and narrow lake runs north and south, making it feel larger than its actual size. Tucked away more than a mile from the gate, it’s surrounded by cliffs, rocks, oaks, and elms, offering a truly picturesque setting.
The lake reaches depths of up to 30 feet in the south end, while the north end is shallower, with only 1 to 2 feet of water. Expect turbid waters—typically about 10 to 15 inches visibility—due to a high population of common carp. While the carp have affected bass recruitment and stirred up the sediment, they also mean that the bass present tend to be larger, averaging around 3 lbs, with some notable catches, including a 13.2 lb bass in 2012.
There’s little to no vegetation, allowing for easy casting with treble hook-type baits. A picnic area is located about 300-400 yards from the dam, making this property an excellent choice for tent camping. A scenic path encircles the lake, inviting you to explore. While bank fishing is limited, a 12-foot V-hull boat is available for member use.
Please note that the lake is 1.7 miles from the gate entrance, accessed via a rough road best suited for trucks or SUVs (smaller SUVs are also fine). Four-wheel drive isn’t necessary, but low-profile cars may struggle. Backside of the Moon is the perfect getaway for those looking to escape from it all!
Requirements
• Road Conditions: The road to the lake is rough and not recommended for smaller or luxury cars. Ground clearance is essential, and SUVs will be fine. The drive includes several cutbacks and crossings, taking at least 10-15 minutes from the gate.
• Boat Restrictions: Do not bring boats larger than 17 feet, as navigating turns with a trailer can be challenging.
• Neighbor Fishing: Please be aware that about 3 to 4 times a year, the owner’s neighbor may fish the lake unannounced. While it’s rare for this to coincide with your visit, it’s a possibility to keep in mind.
• Bass Policy: DO NOT HARVEST ANY BASS AT THIS SITE. You may remove any crappie and catfish caught, and please report them to the club office through the online reservation system after your outing.
• Deer Stands and Feeders: DO NOT APPROACH ANY DEER STANDS OR FEEDERS. Stay at least 100 feet away from any stands or feeders. Game cameras are in use, and violation of this rule may result in revocation of your membership.
Thank you for your cooperation, and enjoy your time at Backside of the Moon!

Livescoping

Fishing was slow, the middle of July didn't help any. I used the Livescope to see fish and underwater structure. Fish were very small and sparse. Spinnerbaits worked best. Powerbait worms drew lots of attention from perch, no bass. This…
