Fished Malouf on Saturday during the afternoon session and just about blew away! The wind was ferocious enough to whitecap the property – definitely the windiest day I’ve seen out at a PWF property. Because of that wind I stayed out of the boat and just walked the bank the first 3 hours I was there. This turned out to be the right move – especially for numbers!

I walked counterclockwise (first along the dam and over towards where the duck blind once was) and all the way back to the shallow end. I would cast 30 yards out and slowly retrieve a black & blue jackhammer chatterbait and about every fourth cast I would get hammered – right at the grass lines. The water level is higher than I have seen in a while so the flooded grass seems to be a preferred spot for the bass. I eventually made my way back to the boat launch and launched the boat just to see if I could find any bass deep – nothing deep, or at least they weren’t biting? I then worked the other bank and once again all the bass were less than 20 yards from the shoreline and some were in less than a foot of water near the cove of trees.

I never deviated away from the chatterbait because it kept scooping them left and right.

I lost count after 30 largemouth. Was likely north of 40 but I don’t really remember, ha. I probably averaged a fish every 10 minutes I was on the property. All bass were healthy with fat bellies so I imagine they were starting to move up for prespawn to feed? All bass were 13-17” and very feisty. The biggest bass was the darkest of them all and was right at 3 pounds – caught in the grass towards the very back shallow part of the property – where the cows were hanging out.

I think next time I’ll do the uncomfortable and really focus on trying to find bass that are sitting in the center and deepest part of the lake. I’ve never had much luck in the deepest sections so I really think/hope there might be some bigger bass lurking down there before spawning season!

As always – thanks to PWF and the land owner for helping maintain something so prisitine so close to the DFW metroplex!
