This was my first trip to Culpepper. My friend and I opted to bank fish because of the boat ramp not handling 16’+ boats.

We got a little later start than planned, but caught fish on 2 of the first 3 casts. We continued to catch a few on topwater until that bite stopped suddenly. After that it was a grind of a morning, but bites did come.

We realized right away that the bank fishing area was not going to be as maneuverable as we thought. Because of the difficulty carrying gear on the terrain, we decided to stay on the west side. We caught fish here and there on swimbait, Senko, lipless, brush hog and swim jig. We ended up landing 12 but also lost more than I care to admit. All were under 3lbs. We harvested 7.

If you do decide to bank fish north of the ramp, be careful walking under the trees. My friend was attacked by a swarm of wasps (or possibly hornets….hard to identify for sure while running). Several stings made for a tough rest of the trip for him.

Even though the bite was tough this morning, I do look forward to returning once the boat ramp extension is complete. This property is probably better for a boat outing, unless you pack light and have enough time to thoroughly work the bank.

I'll be back.  I see a lot of potential and the hope of catching a big one is quite appealing
