Pop and I wanted to get out as it was scheduled to be over 75 yesterday. Thought we’d give Culpepper a try! We did take my 6 yr old with us who didn’t fish but was a good helper and he only broke 2 reels which is a new record for him! lol
Got there around 9:30am and there was a slight breeze. Water temps were around 48-50. Nice concrete boat ramp. Directions were spot on – thank you for that!
We tried up near the islands at first but it was a little gusty and our shallow water pole anchor didn’t seem to be doing the trick. IDK if the bottom was very soft and the wind just drug it along the bottom or what but we ended up drifting down past the boat ramp and fished along the shoreline toward the dam. Gregg hooked into a larger fish but it ended up shaking the hook. He had mentioned that the line just got heavy and he thought he was snagged so didn’t really set the hook. As we made our way to the the barbed wire fence there is a little cover in the water and got some ‘hits’. I use quotes here because they weren’t the type of hits that we’re used to feeling. There was no traditional strike, just kind of got heavier. This is why I used the word sneaky! This happened over and over. Also the bigger fish we did catch didn’t fight like they were bigger….may be due to colder temps still lingering from the previous weeks??
We had the most luck along the shore in-front of the house and before you get to their little private dock. All small ones, but action at least. A few hits came between the two islands as well. The two biggest though – one landed the other hooked – were both along the NW corner area. The lake isn’t deep but there seemed to be a slight drop off in that area.
I did try the crawfish but I suck and using plastic worms/bait and never got a nibble. Rattletrap and Mepps spinner were definitely the winners about evenly matched with the biggest fish going to the Mepps (Gregg).
We stayed until about 3pm so didn’t give it the full court press due to the 6 yr old breaking his kid reel and one of my older backups by bashing them on the side of the boat (smh lol)

Luke: I had the same experience as you did yesterday with the strikes. Not the familiar tap-tap at all on the fish I caught using plastics. The 3+ one was just a slight nudge of the rod tip. I set the hook and ended up with my biggest fish on the last cast of the day. Made me wonder how many I missed because I didn't think they were biting. Or that I was just hitting weeds along the bottom.
