My friend Drew is having major surgery in 2 weeks.  What better way to prepare your mind for surgery than a day on the lake?  We were on the water at first light and throwing topwater.  We caught a handful on hollow body frogs and a popper.  I lost one of those memorable bass that popped the surface with a deep thud.  When I set the hook it didn’t move at all then the bass took off to my right for about 15 feet before the line went slack.  Oh the agony of defeat!  It got my adrenaline level on full alert.

When the sun was fully up enough to see the grass lines I was surprised how much the grass has receded from when I fished the lake in May. It was open all the way to the south end.  Only a few places were topped out.

Drew switched to a square bill and I switched to a green swim jig.    We caught five to six fish along the north side and northeast corner.  He caught the largest of the day 3.65 lbs with the square bill near the dock.  I switched to the wacky rig catching three 3-pounders that were strong fighters.

Drew decided that he had caught enough and set a goal to catch a few nice sized bass on the fly rod.  He fished a “game changer” fly that looked like a miniature fluke in the water.  He caught a couple two pounders that took a few minutes to land plus a handful of bream and a rock bass before a bass it broke off.  It was a good run while it lasted.  We decided to go to lunch about 1:20 in Tioga at Clark’s Outpost.  Good BBQ sandwich and a sweet tea.  When we made it back to the lake we decided it was too hot and we were done for the day.  We finished the day with 51 bass, 9 bream and 3 red eyes.   Excellent day.  We both had a fun day catching up with each others lives as we caught some nice bass.  Let’s all say a prayer for Drew as he has a tough recovery ahead.

Good luck and prayers Drew! – way to prepare your friend – nothing like the water (and a bunch of fish!).
