With the disturbed weather yesterday evening, I decided the head out and see if I could find a couple of fish with some of my best days coming in midsummer rains when I’ve fished, at least historically. I had driven by the Tear Drops a couple of times so I went for it.
In full disclosure, I had a slight crisis of consience and thought about not posting this for a second. Who would know? Can’t I just keep this to myself? But I haven’t missed a post I don’t think, so I’m not gonna start now.
- I arrived at 5:15 and it was dead calm but thunder everywhere so I checked accuweather and it looked like a massive thunderstorm was about to hit, so I retreated off the property and holed up at the Whataburger in case there was hail or excessive winds.
- Thought about just turning back and calling it, but it looked like the thunderstorm would pass by 6:30, so I drove back and waited till I couldn’t hear anymore thunder (my rule is, if you can hear it, the lightning can hit you, and I’m not looking to get struck)..
- I got out of the car and started walking from the road to the first lake (not sure if upper or lower tear drop, but it was the one closest to the road before you make the turn and threw out a magnum spook – I thought I caught a branch because because as I first started cranking the handle my line was heavy. A fish had buried it befor I started to even work the lure, and a good one at that. I walked the fish back to my car to take this picture for some proof, as I didn’t want my phone to get wet with the rain still coming down at a decent clip.
- Grabbed two more rods, one with a frog and one with a buzzbait and just started walking the sides and casting.
- No more fish for a bit, so I walked to middle tear drop and worked my way down till it was too muddy to walk anymore – no luck in a number of spots that should have held fish, so I went back to the first lake.
- About my third cast in near some shallow weeds on a black frog walking it back on the water, I nailed a 6.5lb+ fish. Huzzah!
- I worked my way down the bank on the opposing side of where I started and caught another nice 3.5lb fish on the magnum spook. I then walked down the roads making casts in between the trees and working a frog back to the road. I caught one more that was just shy of 3lbs near my car and by then the sun started to set.
- That small pond isn’t big but it had a few big nasty fish in it that I was fortunate enough to get – I’m guessing they would be tough to catch during the summer conditions, so I’m glad I stayed.
- I had 0 luck at the middle lake but I was only casting topwaters and the water clarity was less than the small pond near the road.
- I didn’t walk to the last lake so I have no idea about it.

Joshua,
As always thanks for the report. We have a member who fishes here about 15-20 days a year. In fact, it is really the only lake he fishes in the club.
Torrence Gordwin (AKA PondBoyss) fished this lake last week. Here is the video.
Most folks focus on the middle and upper lake and don’t fish the bottom lake. Glad you stopped and fished the bottom lake. We added 25 grass carp 18 months as it was completely chocked out. The grass carp are chewing and cleaning it up.
