A dozen members representing all four PWF areas (Dallas, Houston, San Antonia, and Austin) got together the weekend of June 4-6 for fishing and socializing. PWF group trips like this are a great way to see “old” friends again while also meeting other members that you would otherwise not likely ever run into. Heartland 10-10 Ranch is an awsome place for events such as these since it boasts four secluded trophy-managed lakes, seven boats with motors and batteries, and two lodging sites.
Anglers arrived Friday and scattered to the lakes. Bass soon started to be landed despite the somewhat annoying light rain (no lightning). With standing timber, large brushpiles, lily-pad fields, flooded creek channels, and deep water areas, the lakes offer options for applying different fishing techniques (as well as numerous places for the big ones to hide). Ron Dupree won Friday’s Big Bass Contest with a 7.14# caught with a stick-worm. After dinner straight from the grill (thanks Bill!), everyone headed back out for an evening bite.
On Saturday, anglers switched lakes and headed out in the light rain. Several of the lakes provided good early bites and quality fish were caught. The rain ended and a few anglers who had experienced a slow Friday afternoon had a welcome reversal of fortune and outfished the rest of us. Paul Milwood won Saturday Big Bass with a 6.43#. After 12+ hours of fishing, the group gathered at the Owner’s Retreat for a fish fry (including harvested bass). Thanks to Zach and Paul for the hushpuppies and fish! The evening was spent watching softball and basketball on TV, sitting on the back porch watching the deer in the pasture, and telling tall fish tales.
Sunday morning provided some of the best fishing of the weekend before most of the anglers started heading home. A few just couldn’t put their rods down.
While none of the monster bass that Heartland 10-10 is known for were landed on this weekend, many bass over 4 # were caught, several members caught their largest bass of 2021, and many anglers commented on the hard-fighting nature of the bass caught (and the big ones who broke off). This great fishing experience is hosted by landowner Craig Brown who provides outstanding service to his guests (battery charging, on-call motor repair, ...) while they pursue big bass. With the combination of natural beauty, seclusion, track record of big bass, great lodging, and an exception landowner, Heartland 10-10 is a great place for us to visit. Group trips like this are also a great opportunity for socializing with other PWF members, so watch for the next announced trip.
