Slot Fish
Fellow member John Shepard and I arrived at the property and started fishing at 7:30AM. John fished out of the property’s small bass buster and I set off in my Chupacabra for a morning of fishing.
Steady breeze from the northeast increased from ~ 4mph to perhaps 8mph by noon. Mostly overcast with periods of sun. Air temps slowly increasing from mid 70’s to high 80’s, as we fished. Stained water clarity ~2 ft.
John landed 24 and I caught another 14 LMB. Unlike my June 16th report for this property, we caught a full spectrum of sizes (including dinks) with several in the 16 – 20” range. John landed the largest, which was just shy of 21” late in the morning, on a mid depth diving crankbait in the deepest part of the lake (between the island and the dam).
All of the significant action was located around the island and the southern portion of the tank (including the east bank) between the island and the west corner of the dam. We each tried, but had no success throwing at the west bank.
The morning started with a hot bite, with the fish hitting the lures thrown close to the bank or cover, on a white/chartreuse chatterbait with a fluke or paddletail trailer*. At 9am that bite promptly shut off so we switched to worms rigged several different ways (wacky, t-rigged weightless and split shot/carolina) and medium diving cranks with success till our noon departure to nearby Chappell Hill for some decent BBQ, before heading back to west Houston.
* We also had another dozen or so play with the tail of our soft plastic to within feet of boats before abandoning the bait (several of the tails were bitten off).
