When Toby Gets Calm, It Gets Tough

Launched at 6:15 AM and fished until 11:45 AM. Water temperature started around 77°F and climbed to 83°F by the time I loaded the boat.

Overall, it was a slow day compared to what this lake has been producing. I started with a topwater approach, including a frog, but there was no topwater bite at all. Over the past month I’ve had some incredible frog fishing here, including a 7-pound bass about four weeks ago, but the bite has gradually slowed over the last couple of weeks as the summer pattern has started to settle in.

I finished with four bass total. Three were in the 2-pound class, with my biggest weighing 4.1 pounds. All of my fish came from the deeper creek channels using LiveScope. I checked the dam area and found a few fish, but the better concentrations were positioned well off the dam in the deeper creek channels.

The vegetation has changed quite a bit. The grass has become more consolidated in open water and grown in shallow, making it easier to fish than it was a few weeks ago, but there is still a significant amount of floating moss throughout the lake. The fish I caught were healthy and in great condition.

One thing I noticed is that the lake appears to be about a foot low. It also looked like the landowner had a large commercial pump running and was pumping water from the lake to another location. I’m not sure if that’s related to the lower water level, but it was something I noticed while I was there.

This was my first time fishing Toby during the summer pattern, so I’m looking forward to seeing how the fish continue to transition over the coming weeks. One thing I’ve noticed from my trips is that Toby seems to fish better when there’s at least a little wind. In my experience, calm days like today typically mean a slower bite. Even on a tougher day, Toby continues to prove why it’s such a special fishery, and I’ll keep fishing it through the summer and report back as the offshore pattern develops.
