We did a full lap today starting at first light until 11 and found bass up shallow in the weeds looking to aumbush the abundant frogs and baby bluegill which were taking cover. The bass were definitely spooky and sitting in very precarious spots. We enjoyed some epic topwater blowups and also spooked a fair number of fish from their lie. Smaller topwater bugs also yeilded 5 bluegill. The lake is down a bit so we would have likely done well out in the boat, however crawling around the banks was fun and challenging. The fish were sensitive in those situations, but also explosive if the fly landed on the proper side of where they were sitting. Longer leaders with softer landing flies helped a lot so we ended up with 9’ leaders to 15lb. Biggest maybe scared 2.5lbs with a bunch of missed strikes and unpinned fish in the cover. The bigger flies kept the little tikes and the bluegill away. Very fun, topwater fishing to be had with the right presentation.
