It had been a few years since I fished this property, so I didn't really have a game plan until arrival and analysis of the lake. I took a friend. We fished roughly 7:30-4:00. Caught a couple on topwater bites to start the day. It was all about the moving, subsurface lures after that.
The chatterbaits proved to get the most bites, but we also landed bass on a squarebill periodically and a few on soft plastics toward the end of the day. Grass was abundant, but there were still plenty of places to work a lure.
We harvested 49 and returned 14. While the biggest we weighed was only 2lb 13oz, every fish felt twice its actual size. They were all strong and healthy. I have seen forage in a fish’s throat before but nothing like what we saw today. At least a dozen had crawfish claws sticking out. Several others had shad tails. One even had both. It was like they couldn't get full and wanted our lures as dessert. We tried to imitate that forage base with our presentations.
The recent rains did make the drive in a little tough. We dropped into 4Low and took it slow. Once at the water, though, the boat launch was easy. I am not sure why I waited so long to revisit Timber Lake, but it won't be that long before I return.
