I fished Lake TCU today as a last minute trip (having learned on Wednesday I would have Friday morning available) and booked the trip thinking the weather had to improve.
Wrong.
We had more rain Thursday and I woke to thunderstorms Friday morning. I waited for it to clear and hit the property about 7:45 am just as the rains ceased. The ground was soaked with 2 inches of standing water so I parked on the drive and walked to the pond, escorted by Dub’s two donkeys. They were clearly wondering why in the world I was sloshing to the bank of the pond but soon resumed their grazing. The water was 4 feet higher than I had ever seen it, several feet over the normal bank, with 2-3 feet visibility and vegetation throughout the lake approaching 1-2 feet below the surface. I did not have my thermometer. As I laid out my gear Dubs two dogs arrived to keep me company. After communing for 10 minutes or so with the dogs, they settled in to “accompany me on my rounds” as I bank fished the lake.
In the Cliff’s notes version, I got skunked.
I tried top of the water column, middle layer and bottom techinques. Nothing on top water (whopper plopper and stick bait) spinnerbait, square bill, bladed jig, flukes, Texas worms, wacky rig, drop shot, creature baits, or swim baits.I did not throw a casting jig due to the vegetation. I tried each lure in both dark (green pumpkin or dark blue) or light colors. It was very difficult to fish lower in the water column as the vegetation prevented most retrieves.
I left at noon and still cant get the skunk smell out ot the car. May be next time.
