My friend and I fished March 20, with water temps in the mid-sixties. This was my first time on Hat and Star, and the place is immaculate. Visited with Bill, the owner, who was very helpful and kind. I stayed in the on-site lodging which was very nicely done and extremely handy. My buddy and I caught about 35 bass on wacky worms up to 2 lbs, culling most.
We know there are big bass in this lake, and we threw PopRs, buzzbaits, swim baits, tube worms, spinner baits and lipless cranks without a bump. We also tried deep along the creek channel, but the big ones weren’t cooperating. We also tried jigging for the huge crappie Bill says reside there, although he warned they are extremely difficult to catch. We didn’t prove him wrong. This is a convenient property since its only about 15-20 minutes from Gilmer (I recommend La Finca Mexican restaurant).
