My 7 year old and I visited Deer Trail Ranch for some camping and a little bit of fishing. Love this place for its accessibility and ease of camping. The owner briefly swung by to hand off some dry firewood, which was really awesome!

We squeezed in a bit of fishing through the dense fog – didn’t catch much but still had fun getting to relax before the major holiday festivities. A total of 9 fish total, and missed 2 – once of which could’ve been the biggest of the trip but we’ll never know!

Every fish came right off transition zones going from shallow into deeper water. The few culls we had were still fat but under the limit so we removed them nonetheless. Everything that we returned wasn’t much bigger than the limit but were notably fat and super feisty. Biggest of the trip was a beautiful 4.20 pound fighter that did NOT want to come out of the water.

I also caught one giant crappie slab that went after a bright orange slow rolling chatter bait.
