Arrived before dawn with Paul Milwood and on the water at Wild Card by 6:15. Air temp early was around 80° with water temp 84°. Water very clear to 4-5 feet. Nicely rocked road into the little lake was great. Rock at the ramp extended into the lake so it was very easy to launch. Beautiful foggy morning with no wind.
Topwater was slower than expected but we caught several on frogs for the first hour or so, mostly small bass. Sun came out so we switched to wacky Senkos, Chatterbaits and shallow crankbaits. Paul caught the first nice bass, over 3 pounds. Then I got into a true hot spot – just north of the center of the lake, deep with a large half ounce JackHammer Chatterbait, pumpkin green with a 5” green and gold Kitech swimtrailer. Caught 3 nice bass on four casts, then caught more each time we passed through that area. Each one seemed bigger than the last – biggest was almost 4 pounds. No hogs, but Paul and I agreed these were possibly the strongest, fiercest bass we’ve ever caught.
Broke for lunch then back out for a bit. Property owner Joe stopped by and we had a nice conversation – great hospitable owner. He said Wild Card Lake was stocked with culls from AA Lake and there are bass over 6 pounds there now. He said the lake was originally dammed off from and creek then bass added. But the dam broke and everything in the creek poured in. So he named it Wild Card Lake since you never know what you’re going to catch there. Sure enough, my Chatterbait brought in a nice little catfish. And the lake is full of bluegill – they tricked us time and time again – strong strikes kept us on our toes.
There’s submerged grass all over at topped out near the shore. Only wood is some felled trees along the north shore. Saw a few snakes, some ducks, geese and jackrabbits.
Went to Little A just a very short drive away. Both lakes had grass in the lake at the launch site but my bass buddy type boat glided over it easily to clear water before putting the trolling motor down. The wind had picked up some, and we caught bass all along the shoreline. What was interesting was that the water depth dropped off quickly just 30 – 40 feet from the shore. We were not far from shore marking depths of 20-30 feet! But don’t be afraid to fish the deep water. Paul caught nice bass on a red Rattletrap and I caught some on my trusty Chatterbait.
Heat was getting to us so we quit around 3. All in all an excellent outing. Scott told me that Wild Card has better quality fish and Little A has the numbers, and Joe agreed. I’d call this reservation a bargain – easy access to great fishing. You will enjoy your outing here. We sure did.
