60 grass carp were added to Giddings Black Jack Ranch last week. Look for some vegetation relief by the end of 2013. The lake is still fishing good.

Thanks Steve. Does it really take until the end of 2013 to see any change in the vegetation, or did you mean the end of 2012?

Probably will not see any noticeable difference this year. This is because the vegetation has exploded, like most lakes and there is simply too much of it and the carp are too small to make a dent. The key is that they put on some size this year. Most aquatic vegetation becomes dormant and dies back during the winter. When the new vegetation starts to come up next March, the grass carp are able to keep up with it. As the new stuff sprouts they keep most of it cut back. Of course the amount if grass carp you put in, is the tricky part. Too few carp means no real help, because the vegetation quickly wins. Too many and it can eat everything leaving zero vegetation for the bait fish and other critters to hide in. There have been horror stories of how grass carp have ruined a lake, but I am of the opinion that for every one that was ruined dozens or hundreds have benefited. Like anything, grass carp are only a tool and when used properly can have great results. When used improperly have negative results.
